I like that. Usually, I'll write as if I'm speaking to a couple of existing clients, but too often, I lose focus and just write for the sake of writing.

I'll be making a conscious effort to do otherwise :) Thanks for sharing.

Mitch Joel made a comment the other day at a conference I attended that he really only writes his blog for 6 people - the 6 CMOs at the companies that he's trying to attract to his marketing agency business. All the other readers are great, and certainly help with book sales and speaking engagements, etc., but they don't really grow his business.

For small businesses, and especially small B2B businesses, we need to get away from getting them to build a large following and rather find the "who" not the "how many" and get them to focus on that.

Thanks, Anj. Tweetdeck shows you content from all of your connections, totally unfiltered. The News Feed view on Facebook filters your content based on your interactions with your friends. The more you interact with certain friends, the more likely content is to appear there.

Technically, by converting your Likes & Interests to the new format, Facebook connects you to those objects on the Open Graph, GLEE included. Each of those objects has an associated page, so posts from those pages will appear in your stream.

Because you don't have a history of interacting with Web Marketing Nerd and GLEE content on Facebook, that content won't appear in your News Feed.

So you see the challenge that marketers have if they want to reach the "regular" Facebook users who don't use Tweetdeck or other third party tools to stay up to date ;)

Rob,
I am really enjoying and learning a lot from your new blog! I want to tell you my experience with your site. I "liked" your blog and it began showing up in my tweet deck fb news feed. I searched for it today on Facebook page and it took me directly to your site. Your postings do not show up on my regular facebook news feed.

I get other postings to my tweetdeck feed but not on my regular feed. For example, I have in my "Likes & Interests" the television show GLEE. I have never "liked" Glee but it now shows up on my tweet deck feed but not the other. What gives?

Have to agree that people are generally lazy and will not take the time to read...until they get "violated"...pretty typical of life! And as the saying goes...if you're not part of the solution..you're part of the problem! So agreed...stop whining!

Personally I don't care about the ongoing privacy changes - but I read tech blogs etc and generally live my life pretty openly on the internet. Facebook, however, attracted millions of users - the mums and dads, grandparents, internet newbies and people that were not comfortable with sharing on the internet - to do just that with the understanding that Facebook was private. Only their friends could see what they posted - simple. This is no longer the case and the privacy settings, while giving individuals great control over their data, are a long way from simple and the bulk of those users are never going to venture too far into them. They are not reading tech blogs so any education via that route is missing the target. Facebook have changed the rules on these people and it should be their responsibility to educate their users. Of course, Facebook don't want these millions of users systematically closing off their profile data - it's the motherload for target advertising
